Dada (hobby horse), precursor to Surrealism
Began around 1917, in Switzerland, and lasted until about 1924.
It was made up of a group of artists whose mandate was to protest the civilization that had led to WWI.
This civilization was accused of being too interested in "play things"- technology whose fundamental purpose was function, not aesthetics; mechanization which led to such things as weapons of mass destruction.
Even Art was seen as a weapon for propaganda. Freedom of expression had been discouraged.
The Dadaists believed that Art was dead.
This Art movement was therefore seen as Anti- Art.
Examples include: Ready- made Art: Junk was used to make art objects.
Functional objects were taken out of their environment so that their form could be better appreciated,
or their form was altered to make them functionless.
Collages (invented by the Cubists) were made from rubbish, and useless objects were designed.
Artists include: Marcel Duchamp
Man Ray
Hannah Hoch
Surrealism began around 1924
The Key word for this movement is "imagination".
It was influenced by the Dadaist's spontaneity.
It was also influenced by such minds as Sigmond Feud ( father of psychiatry) and his interest in free association, and dream analysis, in attempt to tap into the unconscious mind.
Two types of Surrealism emerged.
1) Representational- employed jumbling realistic objects and or combining them in confusing ways to try to create an
unreal or dream- like world.
2) Automatism- encouraged artists to unleash their unconscious mind, allowing it free rein to create an image. ie doodling
Artists include: Rene' Magritte
Salvadore Dali
Joan Miro
Do any two of the following
1. Some Dada artists took ordinary objects and altered them slightly then called them "ready made art".
Marcel Duchamp exhibited a bicycle wheel on a mounted stool as well as a urinal which he entitled "Fountain".
Man Ray fixed tacks to the pressing surface of a flat iron and titled it "Gift".
Design and build a "ready made" art piece.
Remember- Concern was taking everyday objects and mounting or displaying it so that we see it out of context
- as an art piece with form.
Or- Taking a functional object and making it non- functional.
Do a brief write up explaining your concept and intention.
2. Surrealist Dreams
Many surrealists created paintings which appeared as unreal as dreams, often creating disturbing pictures.
Devices like unrelated objects, unreal spaces and atmosphere coupled with mystery helped create this affect.
Design a painting that creates a dream- like image.
Incorporate at least one of the devices mentioned above.
3. Choose and study an Artist from the Surrealist period.
Design an Art work in their style ( a pastiche')
Include a brief biography of the Artist.
4. Sometimes Surrealist Artists would alter images from magazines or build landscapes and other scenes from cutouts in order
to create images that appeared disturbing, shocking and even humorous. These collage-like pictures often included paint as
well as drawing in order to produce the effect the artist wanted.
Design a surreal environment picture that incorporates the above process.
Do a brief write up explaining idea, process, and results.
