Cubism began around 1905, in France.
It evolved from Fauvism which was interested in creating something entirely new and complete in itself.
Cubism, like Fauvism, centred on colour, line, and composition that expressed feelings- although even the message and emotion was eventually overshadowed by the design of composition.
Although they usually began with an actual object in view, the concern was to make the painting or sculpture an object within itself with the original subject becoming irrelevant.
Aside from the interest in colour, the Cubists began concerning themselves with structure built upon solid shapes that when interlocked created new visual dimensions.
Early Cubist art analyzed the geometric shapes of objects. They would break the subject matter into their basic shapes ie. buildings were seen as solid blocks that could be rearranged.
The actual subject was sacrificed to produce a more decorative and expressive piece.
Colour was used to create the illusion of 3-D forms rather than a flat pattern.
Cubist Artists include: Pablo Picasso
Georges Braque
Juan Gris
Fernand Leger
Fauve Artists include: Henri Mattisse
Andre' Derain
Project
Do one of the following
1. Find a photograph of a landscape and design a cubist style painting or coloured drawing based on it.
2. Find a photograph of a person or group of people and design a cubist painting or coloured drawing from it.
3. Cubists invented the art of collage in which scraps of paper are pasted on a sheet of paper. The entire space did not have to be covered, and
sometimes lines were added to complete the design.
Design a Cubist collage.
4. Stained glass as Cubist Art
Design a Cubist inspired art piece that can be broken into specific sections of colour. (similar to a colouring book picture)
Create a simulated stain glass piece. (see Mr Knapp for details)
5. Design a 3-dimensional sculpture using painted shapes cut from cardboard.
6. Own Choice. (Must be approved)
